WHO ARE WE?
Marcia Sterling

MARCIA STERLING, Band Leader, Violinist, Vocalist
was born into an eastern European Jewish musical family from New York’s Lower East Side. She began her musical training on violin at age five and was concertizing by age ten. She attended the Kansas City Performing Arts High School, and graduated the Conservatory of Music at University of Missouri-Kansas City with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. She continued graduate studies in ethnomusicology at Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University.

In 1977 Miss Sterling moved to Israel to become a member of the Galilee Symphony Orchestra. In 1982 she returned to Chicago where her varied career included six years as violinist with the Frank Sinatra Orchestra, an eight year steady engagement with downtown Chicago's Regency Strings, and as headliner and recording artist with the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band appearing regularly at The Cafe Continental.

Miss Sterling’s passion for Yiddish culture culminated in 1993 when she and her husband Dan, a violist with The Houston Symphony, formed The Best Little Klezmer Band in Texas. Their first album, Schleppin West, has received international critical acclaim. Together, the couple created B.L.K, Inc., a non-profit foundation dedicated to the preservation and regeneration of Yiddish culture through live performance.

Ms. Sterling serves as cantorial soloist for Congregation Kol HaLev, and The L'Chayim Center of Houston. Additionally, Ms. Sterling is the K-2 music teacher at Congregation Beth Yeshurun.
